In early 2018 Germany's ZKM was the first major art institution to acquire CryptoPunks for it's collection. Punks #2554, #1286, #5449, and #2838 were purchased by museum employee Daniel Heiss. Unfortunately in 2021 they also became the first (and so far only) major art institution to burn a punk, as #5449 and #2838 were sent back to the CryptoPunks contract thanks to copy/paste error while moving them. In 2025 all 4 punks were displayed in the museum as part of their exhibition The Story That Never Ends.
